In America, you don't go to jail for criticizing your elected officials. That's exactly what the First Amendment protects.
This week, Caldera Law Partner Courtney Caprio and Attorney Amanda Suarez filed a federal civil rights lawsuit on behalf of Joshua Epstein, alleging a coordinated campaign of First Amendment retaliation by the Town of Surfside and its officials after Joshua exercised his right to free speech to speak out against the government.
Joshua's only "offense" was bravely doing what the Constitution guarantees every American the right to do: publicly criticize government leadership, ask hard questions, and participate in civic discourse during an election cycle.
Instead of responding through democratic means, Town officials abused their authority to intimidate, silence, and ultimately punish a vocal critic through false arrest and criminal prosecution.
